Theertha Yatra

  • Before starting trip, visit grama devatha(or bow in that direction). Do Ganapathi pooja at home. Say Kapardi(Shiva's red hair wet with Ganga water) 3 times.
  • Make sure learn/write sankalpam(for theertha snanam), maha sankalpam for ocean bath. You can ask your usual jyothishudu/priest about sankalpam. It fits in small post-it sheet, but important before theertha snanam.
  • Take notes, not to miss places, shlokas to chant., read stories about theertha yatra places. It gives multiples of punyam by chanting at Theertha Yantra than Home. In some Theertha(gundam) places, there will be specific ashtaka, take them along with you.
  • At Theertha yatra, wake up early, take bath and sit outside the temple/room/hotel. you will be hearing suprabhatham, fresh air surroundings, sit near kund(gundam).
  • Don't eat oil, heavy food in Theertha yatra, drink less water. Eat fruits/light food in nights. So you don't get disturbed with stomach, spend most of the time in waking up, and spend more time inside temple or surrounding places. Adjust to food and staying hotels, after all we came for someone(God's) darshan, not for social trip.
  • Every piligrim is different, we should know history and avatara reason behind it, to enjoy/digest full after seeing in reality. Read/learn/listen about the place you are about to visit, otherwise you won't feel difference between your local temple, and pilgrim place. Most of pilgrims, have specific rules, the order of things todo before and after Darshan.
  • We should enjoy and remember postures on surrounding walls.
  • Observe not only main Deity, but also other deities in the temple. There will be kshetra palakudu in every place, in some places, you can miss main deiti, but you must not kshetra palakudu, it will considered very offensive. Like Kala bhairava at Kasi, Sakshi ganapathi at srisailam, adi varaha swami at Tirumala.
  • Take Bhaskti books along with you, if you are going to be in big queue, spend time in reading them, instead of talking about other, and politics.
  • Eat at Annadan places atleast once, and donate to Annadanam. Never criticize on food.
  • Inside Temple, do not wear hat/caps. don't go with leather wallet/belt. Men should not wear shirt/banian. If possible go on Dhothi, and tie uttariyam to waist.
  • When doing bath in pushkarini/well, take pinch of dirt from it and throw out of water. In river take dirt from out and put it in water. In flowing river, Men has to stand opposite to stream, Women away from stream. When doing in ocean, throw a small rock in water and do maha sankalpam. At other pushkarini places, don't forget to say sankalpam. Couple have to do theertha snanam by holding hands.
  • Take enough Special cloths. Take number of Dhoti and uttariyam to visit Theertha yatra. Use fresh Dhoti and uttariyam every time you go inside Temple. If you can afford, leave them for poor people, at Theerrtha snanam.
  • Talking, seeing, reading Good in Pilgrims give crores of multiple results. Same case if you talk, see bad gives multiples of bad. So try to stay, talk, see, eat good. Help others in pilgrim places, give fruits, buy fast darshan tickets for deserved people.
  • After coming from Theertha yatra, do thank Grama devatha, kula daivam and do pooja at Home. Spread prasadam to Good people, respect prasadam (shound't give or take with shoes On), and give in proper location and space.

History of Kashi Vishwanath Temple
The original Kasi Viswanath Temple was ruined by Aurangazeb and he built a mosque in its place. The traces of the old temple can be seen behind the mosque. During the 18th century, the present temple was built by Maharani Ahilya Bai of Indore. It was Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Indore who provided the gold plating on the towers of the temple.
Well regarded as the most important place of worship in Hindu religion, Kashi Vishwanath Temple is revered by important Hindu saints such as Adi Sankaracharya, Sri Ramakrishna Paramhamsa, Swami Vivekananda, Goswami Tulsidas, Swami Dayananda Saraswati and Gurunanak (Guru Nanak). It is believed that a visit to Kashi Vishwanath Jyotirlinga Temple and a bath in the river Ganga shows the way to Moksha (liberation). Another custom is that one should give up at least one wish, after a pilgrimage to the temple. A visit to the temple at Rameswaram in South India is also included in the pilgrimage. From there, people take the water of Ganga to perform prayer at Kashi and bring back the sand from that temple.
Schedules and TimingsKashi Vishwanath Temple Varanasi opens daily at 2:30 am. Aarati is performed five times, daily. Mangala Aarti is from 3 am to 4 am. Then it is opened for devotees from 4 am to 11 am. From 11.30 am to 12 noon, mid-day Bhog Aarti is done. Again from 12 noon to 7 pm, devotees can worship. From 7 pm to 8.30 pm, evening Sapta Rishi Aarti is done. After that devotees can visit till 9.00 pm, when Sringar/Bhog Aarti starts. After9.00 pm, devotees can worship from outside only. Shayan Aarti starts at 10.30 PM and the Kashivishwanath Temple closes at 11 pm.
KasiVishwanath Temple, There will be 2 kasi vishwanath Temples, one is main Vishwanath temple with Annapurna Devi, and the second is Gyaana Vapi near Mosque. You have to specifically ask to see both places. There is also 3rd Vishwanath temple(Birla Temple) at Banaras Hindu University, which is new, and peaceful temple. In the evening you can get Abhishekam Ticket for next day morning, there won’t be any queue for tickets. Once you get ticket, they write priest name behind the ticket, that priest will take care your abhishekam rituals. You have to come early morning around 1:30am to get queue, but they allow inside around 3am. Once inside priests do suprabhatham, last about 1 hour. Few priests come and check abhishekam tickets, and they divide by groups by priest name, they make you stand in line. East priest will take family inside garbha gudi, and makes us do abhishekam, he arranges pooja items needed for abhishekam. Depending on rush, abhishekam last between 5-15 mins. I think there were other seva times, anyone individually can do, but I didn’t. There will be short queues anytime during day, may be yuou can get darshan in about 30-60 mins, but in day time, they put wooden gates around Lingam, you may not get chance to touch Linga, unless you have long handsJ But During morning Abhishekamm, and after night Aarthi, they take out those gates, you can easily touch and bow. You can request priest sitting there for flowers, vihuthi, and Prasad. You can find small shops with Lockers,  they don’t allow camera and mobiles inside temples, so you can leave them at hotel or at lockers here.
Annapurna Temple - Located near the Kashi Vishwanath temple, believed to be the "Goddess of Food". She is a form of Parvati. She is also known as ashipuraadeeshwari ("Queen of Kasi"). It is the mother who provides food for the child, and it is again no wonder that we pray to the goddess Parvati as Annapurna, the one who gives us food. It is believed that Parvati gave Alms to Shiva, and she is depicted with a bowl in one hand and ladle in the other, serving food to Shiva, standing in front of her, with his begging bowl in His hand.
Sakshi vinayaka temple is very near the gate no.1 of the Vishwanath temple
Vishalaskhi Temple, this temple is about in 0.25km(walkable) from main Kasi Vishwananth temple. Visalakshi is the second consort of Shiva in this holy city of Kashi. This temple is one among the 52 Shakti peethams, and is part of the famous triad of temples- Kanchi Kamakshi, Madurai Meenakshi and Kashi Visalakshi. This small temple is situated in one of the narrow lanes around the Vishwanath temple. Adi Shankaracharya, when he visited the temple, performed prayers to renew the powers of the temple and the goddess which had borne the brunt of several invasions. He also installed a Sri Yantram there, and it is to this Yantram that puja is done. Kumkumarchana to this Sri Yantram is considered very special, and can be performed by asking the pujari there.
Kala Bhairava, is the protector of Varanasi. One must have to visit Kala Bhairava at Varanasi. Kala Bhairav is the guardian deity of Kashi. He occupies the position of a guard/ watchman with a dog as his vehicle, and is regarded as one of the forms of Shiva himself. These are - Kala Bhairav, Dhandapani, Veera Bhairav, Batuk Bhairav, Aashu Bhairav, Aananda Bhairav, Rudra Bhairav and Ruru Bhairav. Among these, Kala Bhairav is the most important one, visited by all those who visit Kashi. Dhandapani, or the one who wields a stick, is the one who decides on the punishment, while Kala Bhairav is the one who enforces his decision. In the words of our guide, Dhandapani is the commissioner, while Kala Bhairav is the constable.  It is said that Kala bhairava is in 2 forms, one who takes to Swargam,a nd one who takes to Narakam. Kala Bhairava is in the form of a Dog, you will see lot of dogs around the temple, you can feed something to Dogs here. Without his permission no one can stay in Kashi.
There will be lot of cows(Gomatha) in varanasi, everywhere on roads. Buy banans and feed them.
Manikarnika Kund, Take 3 dips in Manikarnkina Kund at exactly 12 noon, and take bath in Ganga river very next to it. Before Manikarniaka Kund bath read this{link} . There is burning ghat at Maikarniaka ghat. It is special and holy place for last rites.
Ganga Aarathi, Gange aarti takes place at 6.45 PM in the evening after the sunset for around 45 minutes at the Dashashwamedh ghat, Devotees have to come to see Gange aarti at least one hour before. The arati by 7 priests ( dressed in similar way) and 4 in another ghat starts at the same time. The chanting of mantrs by these young Pandits sends some mystic waves through you. These 7 priests stand on stais, facing towards Ganga and do aarthi. You can sit on stirs and watch too, but best view is hire a boat at any Ghat, and watch Aarthi from Ganga river. You will see hundreds of people on stairs, and tens of boats n Ganga river at that time. Aarathi last abt 2 hrs.

Triveni Sangamam is at Allahabad about 120km from Varanasi. This is where Ganga, Yamuna, and saraswati meet. This is unique place one has to do few rituals only once in a life time. It is believed that one in life has to take dip at this sangam place You can hire an individual boat(cost 2000rs), or go on group boat(costs each 200rs), which takes you the rivers merging place. It feels fantastic, you feel you are in the middle of river, but it will be in waist height, you can also see different colors of Ganga, and yamuna rivers, saraswathi is believed to be underground. You can start early morning from Varanasi to Allahabad in a rental car(costs 4000rs w/driver), all the rituals can be completed in 2-3 hours. If you start from Varanasi at about 5am, you will return by 3-4pm.
A number of rituals are traditionally performed at Allahabad
An interesting ritual performed at the Sangam is that of Veni Daanam(http://youtu.be/2ohtGx9zlt4?t=5m55s). This is a practice followed by married women for the long life of their husbands. The husband is supposed to comb and plait the wife’s hair and after decorating it with flowers, the end of the plait is cut off and offered to the rivers. Some men even shave off their hair/beard and offer it also to the rivers. This procedure is performed while travelling by boat to the Sangam and the hair is offered along with flowers, etc at the confluence. What is interesting is that hair, being light normally floats on water, but at this place, the hair sinks straight to the bottom.
(one of the trio along with Sethu Madhava and Bindu Madhava, as I have mentioned

Arunachalam

Visiting notes
Aurnalacha Giri Pradakshina
Arunachaladevalyamu Mukhyasthanamulu
Arunachaleswarula Divya Namamulu

There are lot of temples in Aruncachalam. Famous nayanar deities are inside temple. It's a huge temple.
This place is also called Agni lingam. The hill itself is Lingam here, You can see Parvathi as small hill attached to Arunachalam and natural Nandi looking at them. Big temple is down the foot of hill.
A person visiting Arunachalam, must do pradakshinam to the Hill. It is more auspicious if you do on Pournami night. It is about 14km, it is a flat path. It has good Foot path, one can start early morning after bath, on bare foot. There are lot of small temples on this path, you can take darshan and take rest for few mins.

The Siddhas say that any one who visits Arunachala must perform giri valam(circle around Hill). Why? Because this is the proper procedure for worshipping Arunachala. Even Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra did it. When the Lord appeared as an infinite jothi sthambam (pillar of light), no one, including Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra could comprehend Him. Only after they performed girivalam could They see Him. So if giri valam is the proper procedure for the Brahma, Vishnu and Rudra Trinity.

On Girivalam path, you will see below temples,
Arunachala Brahma Lingam - The Starting Point. Make your way to the Brahma Lingam shrine within the temple. Click here! This shrine is the starting point for your first giri valam. Worship the Lord and make your way to the south gopuram.
Arunachala Eka Munikkal Koombu Mukha Darshan,  The South gopuram of the Arunachala temple is landmark 2 in the giri valam map. Look at the Arunachala Hill from the south gopuram. This vision is known as Eka Munikkal Koombu Muka Darshan. This is the vision that reminds one of forgotten promises. If you don't stay true to your word, whether inadvertently or not, bad karma is the result. This vison reminds you of things that you may have to do to keep up your word.
Indra Lingam, Visit the Indra Lingam shrine, landmark 3 in our girivalam map. This is the first of the eight Ashta Dik Lingams on the giri valam route.
Karpaga Vinayaka GANESH,  The next stop is the Karpaga Vinayaka Ganesh temple, landmark 4 in our giri valam map. Worship Lord Ganesh and continue on the girivalam route.
Agni Lingam,  Agni Lingam shrine, landmark 5 in our giri valam map. This is the second of the eight Ashta Dik Lingams on the girivalam route. Just within this segment of the giri valam, there are hundreds of important Arunachala darshans. These should be learnt directly from the Sathguru.
Thejo Mukha Linga Darshan,  Seshadri Ashram, landmark 6 in our girivalam map. The vision from here is Théjó Muka Darshan. This vision makes the indecisive decisive; it gives clarity of thinking to those who are muddled. It helps those who are not successful in business or in making friends.
Eru Pancha Mukha Darshan,  Ramana Ashram, landmark 7 in our giri valam map. Éru Pancha Muka Darshan, the vision that redeems. Expiatory darshan for those who may have sinned because of the pressure of circumstances. Protects them from sinning again. This is the Arunachala darshan near Ramana Ashram.
Eka Mukha Linga Darshan,  If you go deep inside the Ramanashram and look at the Hill, Lord Arunachala gives you His Eka Mukha Linga Darshan, said Sathguru Venkataraman.
Arunachala Dhida Mukha Darshan,  Near Ramana Ashram is another little ashram. The vision from here is Dhida Muka Darshan. The Lord advised the Universal Mother to see this darshan during Her girivalam! This is the vision that gives one a resolute, purposeful approach to life. The wavering mind becomes purposeful as a result of this darshan.
Arunachala's Bringi Muni Mayaana Darshan,  Nandi Mandapam on top of a huge rock. The vision from here is Bringi Muni Mayaana Darshan.
Prithvi Bangaru Mukha Darshan,  Next we come across the huge Prithvi Nandi deity, the first of the Pancha Bootha Nandi deities on the giri valam route. The vision from here is Prithvi Bangaaru Muka Darshan. This is a very important darshan. Offer deepam and incense to Arunachala from here and prostrate yourselves in front of Him. This vision offers relief from poverty. It blesses one with wealth and gold.
Yama Lingam shrine, landmark 8 in our girivalam map. This is the third of the eight Ashta Dik Lingams on the giri valam route.
Appu Nandi and Arunachala Mitra Chaaru Darshan,  Appu Nandi deity in a small mandapam, the second of the Pancha Bootha Nandi deities on the girivalam route. Look at the peak of the hill through the horns of the Nandi deity. This vision is known as Mitra Chaaru darshan. This is the vision that reunites those who are estranged or separated; it's the vision that retrieves that which you may have lost, whether it be land, money or anything else.
Nirrti Lingam,  Nirutthi Lingam shrine, landmark 9 in our giri valam map. This is the fourth of the eight Ashta Dik Lingams on the girivalam route.
Kama Kadu (Forest of Desire) Darshan,  As we continue on the giri valam route, we see dense shrubbery on our right. This shrubbery is so dense that it obscures Arunachala from our sight. The Siddhas refer to this shrubbery as Kaama Kaadu, the forest of desire. Once we "enter" the forest of desire, we can't see Arunachala any more. This is the symbolism behind this dense shrubbery. This is the place to give up improper desires. If you have succumbed to lustful desires, this is the place to ask for forgiveness. This is the place to expiate the bad karma resulting from lust and the evil wrought by it. This is also the place to expiate those sins resulting from not caring properly for the yagnopaveetha sacred thread.
